We, human beings, have such an inbuilt capacity to worship, and it is for this reason, that we are so susceptible to being enslaved. We are seeing collapses of major institutions on all fronts around the world including organized religions..
Religion, A Set Of Beliefs
And unfortunately religion is not able to provide the solace that so many of us want in our lives. Religion is a fundamental sets of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by people. For many there is no real connection to God or the Invisible Reality except through religion. Religion is a poor substitute for the heartfelt love of God. Religion is something that is learned, we adopt the beliefs and customs of our birth family. As infants and children we imitate our parents, we need them for our survival, we want so much to be part of their tribe.
Many Never Venture Out Of Adopted Beliefs
Our fundamental beliefs about life are in place by the time we are seven or eight years old. And so many of us never venture outside of our adopted beliefs. During our younger years we rebel, we become too defiant choosing to break free from our families of origin and their customs and beliefs. But as we age, we are not open to anything new, many times we go to the other extreme of being too compliant. We become more inflexible and rigid, as reflected in our bodies. We become more dependent and susceptible to the cultural attitudes of our families and loved ones because we don’t want to lose their love and support. And we replace our connection with the Divine with something more tangible, with the connection to man.
We Are Filled With Spirit
Spirituality is something that is found digging deep within oneself. The word spirituality, I find, is highly misused and misunderstood. I prefer the word simplicity, which to me means being as simple and open as little children. We come into life being filled by Spirit. We are spiritual beings first then we are material beings. The Divine exists in us and as well as all around us. When we recognize and accept our spiritual heritage, we accept all paths just as there are many different kinds of flowers in a garden.
Spiritual And Religious Can Exist Side By Side
Sometimes you have both the spiritual and the religious existing side by side. You see that all the time in the lives of saints who are persecuted by the religion that they love. Their relationship with God is so intense and personal; they are often accused of being misled by the forces of the left. The priests and ministers around them cannot advise them correctly because they cannot imagine that God could speak to a soul in such a profound way. But these saints do not step away from they’re calling, they endure the injustices inflicted and persevere.
One of these great luminaries was St. Teresa of Avila. Born into Spanish nobility in 1515, she was guided to change the Carmelite Order and was called before the Inquisition to invalidate her mystical experiences. The following meditation comes from her master work “The Interior Castle”:
Falling into a place of peaceful being, let all thoughts subside. Imagine before you a beautiful crystal castle; see how it reflects all spectrums of light. Allow yourself to wander through this castle without any desire or agenda, simply being and flowing in the love emanating from the center. Let yourself be absorbed by this love, and look at your own preciousness in the same way that God looks at you.
